What is Platelet rich plasma?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are an exciting, natural, non-surgical method for treating hair loss. A small quantity of your blood is removed, and the red cells are separated from the platelets and plasma. The platelets in this plasma contain numerous growth factors that assist in the process of cell growth, repair, healing. When it is injected into the scalp these growth factors stimulate hair to grow. PRP systems are approved by the FDA; however, they are not specially indicated for hair loss.
When can PRP be used?
Hair loss affects both men and women and can have a significant impact on quality of life. There are many different causes of hair loss and PRP can be used to treat most of them. To determine if PRP would be effective for, you must determine the cause of your hair loss. We recommend an evaluation by one of our board certified dermatologist. The most common type of hair loss is androgenic alopecia (AGA), which is a progressive type of hair loss due to hormonal influences. PRP is most effective for this type of hair loss.
How many treatments are needed?
Initially, patients should receive a series of 3 to 4 treatments, given about 4 weeks apart. Then you will enter a maintenance phase where repeat treatments are performed every 6 to 12 months.
How effective are the treatments?
The majority of patients are very happy with their results, but individual results vary with each patient and PRP does not work for everyone. The longer the hair has been dormant the less likely it will respond. In general, it takes women longer to see the results from the treatment, but effects are usually seen within 60 days.
What are the side effects of PRP injections?
PRP is immunologically neutral and poses no risk of allergy, hypersensitivity, or foreign-body reaction. The main risks are associated with the injection of the product and include pain at the injection sites, soreness, tenderness, swelling, headache, and bruising.
Can it be used with other treatments?
PRP may be used with other medical therapies for hair loss, including minoxidil, spironolactone, finasteride, or ketoconazole. Vitamin supplementation (such as Nutrafol) is beneficial and will improve your results. Your doctor will discuss all of your treatment options
